Georgia Lawyer: Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella Alert

Yasmin and Yaz are types of birth control pills made Bayer Healthcare. This pill also is sold as a generic brand known as Ocella.

Yasmin and Yaz both are made with an estrogenic compound, ethinyl estradiol, that has been used for some time. The progestin in Yasmin and Yaz is new. Yasmin and Yaz both contain drospirenone, a “fourth generation” progestin – no other birth control pills contain drospirenone, except for a recently approved generic version, Ocella.

Drospirenone may sometimes serve to work as a act as a diuretic, which puts women at risk for dehydration as well as increased potassium levels in the blood. While drospirenone may also help to limit the severity of menstrual symptoms, some claim that it may also expose women to an increased risk of blood clots or other side effects. The FDA has warned of issues relating to increased serum potassium.

As the body absorbs this, the process may result in the formation of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and even death. Dehydration can also cause kidney stones and gallbladder disease.

Since 2004, the FDA has received adverse event reports and/or claims of more than  40 reports of death among users of Yasmin and Yaz.

Two studies published in the British Medical Journal found that women taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella are twice as likely to suffer blood clots as those taking other forms of birth control pills. In addition, women taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella have been significantly more likely to suffer heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, gall bladder problems or death compared with users of another commonly prescribed birth control pill, Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Women have claimed and reported cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, intracardiac thrombus (blood clots in the heart), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs), and stroke in women under 50 years of age.

The FDA issued a warning letter to the makers of Yaz in 2009, and you can read it here. http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/ucm182206.htm.
