What is Byetta?
Byetta
is a Type 2 Diabetes medication approved for use by the US Food and
Drug Administration in April of 2005. Byetta is a synthetic version of
exendin-4. Byetta works differently for each diabetic and can also aid in weight loss.
In August 2008, the FDA announced that pancreatitis-related injuries and deaths continue to rise as a result of Byetta.
The first FDA advisory related to Byetta was issued in September 2007.
The warning followed an announcement in October 2007 alerting patients
and doctors to approximately 30 reports of patients suffering severe side effects such as pancreatitis. The FDA has received information on an additional
six adverse reactions since the October 2007 announcement. Of those six
patients, two died.
Side Effects

- Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis
- Necrotizing Pancreatitis
- Severe Stomach Pain or Cramping
- Death
The FDA recommends that patients who take Byetta (exenatide) seek
medical care promptly if they have unexplained persistent severe
abdominal pain, which may be accompanied by vomiting. The FDA said
Byetta (exenatide) should be discontinued if pancreatitis is suspected
and it should not be restarted in patients with acute pancreatitis
unless an alternative cause is identified.
